Senior year: commit, sign, or keep dropping time.
Signing opens in November. For many boys, the most important marks are still ahead.

The National Letter of Intent is gone. Since October 2024, you commit by signing a written offer of athletics aid, on the same signing dates as before. Once you sign, other schools have to stop recruiting you.
Track has two signing windows: an early period in mid-November of senior year and a regular period that opens in April. Division III has no athletic scholarships and no binding signing, so your D3 timeline is the admissions calendar.
Girls vs boys this year
Girls
- Most D1 women’s scholarship spots are committed by the fall. If you’re uncommitted in September, widen the list now: D2, NAIA and the D3 schools you’d want to go to anyway.
- A big senior indoor season can still open doors, but move on it fast. Coaches are filling the last spots, not starting new searches.
Boys
- Senior year is live for boys. Senior XC and indoor marks move men’s boards, and many men sign in April.
- If you just broke out, email every coach on your list with the new mark the same week. Coaches still looking for men are looking at senior marks.

Fall · Cross country
Early signing period in mid-November. Distance boys: senior XC is still a live recruiting season.
Winter · Indoor
Uncommitted athletes, especially boys, can still move boards with a big indoor mark. Email the week it happens.
Spring · Outdoor
Regular signing period opens in April. Plenty of men’s spots, and D2/NAIA spots for both genders, get filled here.
Summer
Final eligibility certification, final transcript, and the summer training plan from your new coach.
Your senior-year checklist
- Don’t sign anything until you have the aid offer in writing. Get it in dollars, for four years if possible.
- Compare every offer against the school’s real cost of attendance, not tuition.
- Ask whether it’s a roster spot, athletic aid, or both. They are not the same thing.
- Request final amateurism and academic certification from the NCAA Eligibility Center (D1/D2).
- D3: apply to schools on their early action/early decision deadlines, then compare need-based and merit packages.
Rules that apply this year
- Early signing period: mid-November of senior year (November 11, 2026 for the Class of 2027). Regular period opens in April.
- A written offer of athletics aid replaced the NLI in October 2024. After you sign, other schools must stop recruiting you.
- D1 opted-in schools cap track rosters at 45 per gender (cross country counts separately). More scholarship money is allowed, but whether a program funds it is a budget decision.

Mistakes we see every year
- ✕ Treating a verbal offer like a signed one.
- ✕ Comparing tuition instead of total cost of attendance after aid.
- ✕ Boys stopping their outreach in the fall. The April signing period exists for a reason.
