▸Hall of Fame coach LeRoy T. Walker built NCCU into an international track power - his athletes accounted for 30 national titles and eight Olympic medalists - and he became the first African-American head coach of a U.S. Olympic track & field team (1976 Montreal) and later the first Black president of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

▸Lee Calhoun, who won NCAA 120-yard hurdles titles for North Carolina Central (then North Carolina College) in 1956 and 1957, became the first man ever to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the 110m hurdles (Melbourne 1956, Rome 1960) - the school's first Olympic gold medalist.
