▸URI hammer thrower Henry Dreyer won the 1934 NCAA outdoor hammer throw title, one of the program's earliest national champions.

▸Dreyer competed at Rhode Island during the tenure of Fred Tootell, the 1924 Olympic gold medalist in the hammer throw and the first American-born athlete to win that event, who had a 39-year affiliation with URI (1925-1964) as a professor of physical education and coach of track, cross country, and tennis, later serving as athletic director from 1953 to 1962.
